Fireman's Muster

Fireman's, Muster, Main Street, horse

Each year since 1849 a number of fireman's musters are held during the summer throughout New England. Volunteer crews man these old hand pumps to see who's pumper can shoot the furthest stream. A firemans' muster is held here in Salem each August with many hand pumps from around the region.

Originally these old pumpers were pulled by horse. Nowadays they are "trailered" to the site of the muster then rolled in place by manpower. One may occasionally see an old hand pump pulled by horse in a local parade.
