The Power of Shadow and Light

Image
I found a little know park called McCabe Park in Salem, which is reached through a boat launching ramp parking lot. It's not well marked and once you reach it, there are some run down picnic tables and benchs. It's worth the trek in because the views are tremendous. It was near the foundation of one of the two transmission towers that abut the property that I got a better view. Looking straight up this is what I saw...

My painted pigs post has hit 20,000 page views. This is since we started keeping track a little less than one year ago. I'm still perplexed as to why this post is so popular.

Fran and Bunt's Western Adventure - Part 3

Image
This post is the third in a 10 part series on a trip that my mother and my aunt took to the western part of the United States back in 1990.

At this point in her life my mother, Fran, was recovering from complications with her legs and other health issues. She was recently retired from an admitting clerk position she held at a local hospital. Both her and my Auntie Bunt, my father's sister, were very good friends and both widows.

They were also very adventurous...
June 3 1990 Sunday Day 6

Slept well and we had our famous breakfast which consists of coffee, juice, and nilla wafers. We walked to post office about a mile for a little exercise. Hottest day so far 70 degrees. We checked out of Yavapie lodge at 9.50am. We had a slight problem about phone calls but they corrected it. No noise when we stepped on brakes which we first heard at Mesa Verde (day 4). Mileage 7815. We stopped at desert view and watchtower as we came out of Grand Canyon National park. We saw white faced hereford c…

Are You Ready for the Summer? - Campfires

Image
There's no better place to bond with camp friends than at a campfire. Traditional songs are sung. Traditional challenges are held. Traditional stories are told. Traditional awards are presented. New friends are made. Notice the key word here? Tradition. It's a huge part of camp life. Results = fun :)

Are You Ready for the Summer? - Camp Pranks

Image
What's summer camp without pranks? Some unlucky counselor found his bed and clothes cupboard on the swim raft after he returned from a night out on the town. Could this be the action of campers or fellow counselors? Results = fun :)

Steel and Fog

Image
This week's Thursday Challenge theme is "steel." I snapped this shoot on Wednesday during a gloomy two weeks of weather. The building in the fog is the Federal Court House in Boston. This is the unused steel girder bridge on Northern Avenue. It still can be used by pedestrians.

Flying Fish

This was a find raiser in Boston back in 2001. It was called "Cavalcade of Cod." The sacred cod is the symbol of the State of Massachusetts. So there were many creative cod fish "flying" around the city that summer.

Fran and Bunt's Western Adventure - Part 1

This post is the first in a 10 part series on a trip that my mother and my aunt took to the western part of the United States back in 1990.

She was recently retired from an admitting clerk position she held at a local hospital. Both her and my Auntie Bunt, my father's sister, were very good friends and both widows. They were also very adventurous.

This travelogue was a typical thing my mother did. She was always the chronicler of all our vacations and day trips. She kept journals for a long period of her life. I haven't even had a chance to look at those journals since she passed away.  She typed these pages with all caps on my home computer (big clunkers back then) which I let her borrow for about a month.

I've divided this three week trip into 10 posts. As the photos are actual scans from the pages of her album I have transcribed the text with my own notes …
