Fran and Bunt's Western Adventure - Part 3
This post is the third in a 10 part series on a trip that my mother and my aunt took to the western part of the United States back in 1990.
At this point in her life my mother, Fran, was recovering from complications with her legs and other health issues. She was recently retired from an admitting clerk position she held at a local hospital. Both her and my Auntie Bunt, my father's sister, were very good friends and both widows.

June 3 1990 Sunday Day 6
At this point in her life my mother, Fran, was recovering from complications with her legs and other health issues. She was recently retired from an admitting clerk position she held at a local hospital. Both her and my Auntie Bunt, my father's sister, were very good friends and both widows.
They were also very adventurous...
Slept well and we had our famous
breakfast which consists of coffee, juice, and nilla wafers. We walked
to post office about a mile for a little exercise. Hottest day so far
70 degrees. We checked out of Yavapie lodge at 9.50am. We had a slight
problem about phone calls but they corrected it. No noise when we
stepped on brakes which we first heard at Mesa Verde (day 4). Mileage
7815. We stopped at desert view and watchtower as we came out of Grand Canyon National park. We saw white faced hereford cows in the
road. Interesting because you never see farm animals in the road in New England. Chief Yellow Horse has been advertising all along this
route so we stopped at his deluxe emporium 2/3 off on all items
jewelry, rugs. No sale!! We took route 89 north from Cameron Arizona to Lee"s Ferry for our usual lunch of cheese and crackers. Almost
indescribable scenery, beautiful rocks all different shades of gray,
rust, pinks and reds with vermilion cliffs in the background. Antelope pass 6000 ft then 8000 ft with beautiful ponderosa pine all
around us. We had a very sinking feeling when our car stopped in the
middle of the road. We didn"t know what to do. After trying to
start it again & again we decided to wait 15 minutes before we
tried again. Hurray!! The motor started and two happy old ladies
started on their way again. We stopped at the first filling station
we saw. Bunt asked a real young fellow if there was a mechanic on
duty. He said he could probably help us. He did by putting "heet"
in our gas tank because we had vapor lock. Smart young fellow!! It
wasn't too bad of an experience but it sure scared us for a
short time. We were at Jacob's Lake also the road to the north
rim but we decided to continue on our way. (mile 7984) in Utah, (mile
8017) 3:45pm we found a great Motel Perry Motel Kanab Utah. We stayed
in Ronald Reagan's room and had a delicious dinner of breaded veal and Bunt had poached salmon for about 12.50 each.We also had our first
swim on our first hot day. 206 miles today.
June 5 1990 Monday Day 7
were leaving kana6 utah after having a
great walk around the small town. we're mixed up on the time change
again. utah time 9:15am mileage 8021. bunt saw a dead horse in a
cave. she has also seen a dead deer.skunk, sheep and a cow. she's
sorry i missed all these sights. the roads are paved in red cement in
zion national park. we stopped to take pictures of wild flowers and
the spectacular scenery looking up the huge rocks and sandstone. we
had to go through a long tunnel and quite a windy road to the
visitors center.beautiful scenery! we had another tailgated lunch
outside of cedar city. we found a great best western town &
country motel in cedar city utah for $58.50 plus tax with a pool and
laundry. we had a swim and went for a walk to the "sizzlers
restaurant". i had poached salmon and bunt had lemon chicken,
baked potato, salad bar. delicious! $7:35 each. back to room at 6:00pm
hh, laundry, and rummy kubes. we've traveled 1,142 miles so we
decided to rest tomorrow.
June 6 1990 Tuesday Day 8
84 degrees in the shade at 10:30am. We're
sitting outside our room writing cards and journal. We"ve had
our now famous breakfast highlighted by a banana and we' ve also
taken a half hour walk. We had brunch at "Sizzlers" which
consisted of delicious fried fish, baked potato, and salad bar, for
the great price of $7.35. We did some grocery and booze shopping then
back to motel to the pool and jaccuzzi. Temperature now 98 degrees. We walked across the street to Kentucky Fried Chicken for snacks just
because the fellow next door did. Oh dear the power of suggestion but
it sure tasted good for $4.00. We really enjoyed our day at this motel
in the little town of Cedar City, Utah.
